5 Books to Get You Through a Reading Slump

Stuck in a reading slump? These 5 books will get you through it! @stylishinthestacks

Reading slumps–they happen to all of us.  Yes, even to those of us who love love love to read.  So if you find yourself feeling like you should be reading but just don’t have a lot of inspiration or energy, here are some go-to books that will help you over that hump.  Get through that reading slump-hump!

1.  Confess by Colleen Hoover

Wow, everyone is talking about Colleen Hoover right now!  Especially my assistant–she listens to audiobooks for about 99% of her reading but has been reading hardback Colleen Hoover books like crazy!  I know I usually only read young adult books, and Colleen is adult, but she’s definitely worth mentioning.  Her books are romance/contemporary and have a lot of moments that make you go “Oh my gosh!”  You could honestly start with any of her books/series, but Confess is one that many people recommend.  If you’re one of those people that likes to read a book before it’s too well-known, jump on the Colleen Hoover bandwagon NOW!

2.  The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider

I LOVE me some Robyn Schneider.  Her books are standalone, clever, and fast-paced.  In the first five pages of The Beginning of Everything, we see a dumb teenager lose his head (literally) when he stands up on a roller coaster–and what’s crazier, we also see another teen on the roller coaster catch that head in his hands!  Yeah, you’ll be hooked right away.
This book features popular junior Ezra who finds himself reinventing his image in his senior year when he is hit by a car and left slightly crippled.  It is great for guy readers, girl readers, and those who have always felt a little on the outside.

3.  Across the Universe by Beth Revis

No, not the Beatles’ song.  If you love dystopian and science fiction then you will race through this book.  The first chapter alone will give you chills.  The main character, Amy, and her family have their bodies frozen so they can wake up on another planet in 300 years to start new life.  But Amy gets unplugged 50 years too soon and discovers that someone wants her and many of the other frozen bodies dead.
This book is part mystery, part thriller, and all things sci fi and dystopian.  Fantastic!

4.  We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

The Liars are a group of family/friends with a tight-knit bond.  When Cadence falls out of the graces of the other Liars, she can’t understand why or seem to function properly.  But when she discovers the mystery of why she has become an outcast, she will never be the same.  And when you find out why–well then you need to lie to everyone else about it.
A mysterious book with a shock ending–a quick read that’s sure to be fun!

5.  Everything Everything by Nicola Yoon

We take advantage of the normals in our life, right?  Like the ability to walk outside without the threat of dying from an unseen disease.  But Maddy doesn’t get such a normal luxury and has been inside her house for the past 16 + years, knowing that any step outside could be her last.
But maybe there’s more to Maddy’s story than she thought–and that could change everything.
Maddy’s story is addictive and eventually explosive–you’ll want to reread this one as soon as you finish!
Let me know which books on this list you pick up–and how YOU get through a reading slump!
