Reading Resolutions and a Free Reading Log!

Happy 2017!  I just love starting a new year–dreaming about what I’ll accomplish and feeling all fresh.  So it should go without saying that I always make New Year’s resolutions.  Especially reading resolutions.  Why reading resolutions?  Well I think reading is one of those things that we never really have time for, so if we don’t make goals, we’ll inevitably push reading off to the side.  Sometimes we have to push ourselves to read–thus reading resolutions.

Last year I made some reading resolutions…and we’ll just leave it at that.  Needless to say, I didn’t hit many of my goals.  But that’s ok!  It was a crazy year for us–my husband started a business, my youngest child finished potty training (hallelujah!), my oldest child started Kindergarten and broke his arm, and I fought pneumonia practically all of November.  So reading didn’t always happen.  But I’m looking ahead to my 2017 reading!

So here are my 2017 Reading Resolutions!

5 Reasons to Read Mindy McGinnis

5 Reasons Why You Should Read Mindy McGinnis!

The first time I read a Mindy McGinnis book, I knew I wanted my friends to read her, too.  The second time I read a Mindy McGinnis book, I knew I wanted my students to read her, too.  And now that I’ve read all four of her published books?  I’m obsessed.

So obsessed, in fact, that I had her visit my school last week.  My students have spent the semester analyzing, exploring, and discussing her books and we couldn’t wait to pepper her with questions and emotions (spoiler: we may have asked her “WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!”).

But if you need some convincing, here are 5 reasons why you should read Mindy McGinnis.

How Not to Look Like a Librarian (1)

How NOT to Look Like a Librarian--Gingham and Green

Ok, don’t get me wrong.  I LOVE being a librarian–it is definitely my dream job in many ways.  But when you think of a librarian, do you think of fashion?  Trends?  Style?  Ummm, no.  And I can vouch from attending many librarian conferences that fashion is not often the forefront of everyone’s mind.

But I AM a librarian who loves talking about fashion and style (ahem–Stylish in the Stacks) so I don’t necessarily want to be told that I look like a librarian.  So here’s a series to show off looks that I love that are cute, fun, and stylish without the “librarian” label. Continue Reading →

3 Reasons Why You Should Read All American Boys

I don’t watch the news consistently, but I’ve been keeping up with it enough to have a recurring feeling–our country is tearing itself apart.  Politics (need I say more?), racism, shootings, social media attacks and tangents–every day seems to bring a new disaster that piles onto those before.  It’s disheartening, frustrating, and sometimes just downright scary.  And as an educator, I feel called to help my high school students dig through the crazy and find some hope. Mogie: The Heart of the House–Book Review and Pancake Recipe

Hopefully by now it’s obvious that I think books help you explore your life…and they can totally add style to your life, too!  My boys and I loved the book Mogie: The Heart of the House by Kathi Appelt.  It’s about real-life Labradoodle Mogie and how he lifts children’s spirits at the Houston Ronald McDonald House.  A sweet, inspirational story for sure!

To celebrate our summer reading, my boys and I made our own Mogie pancakes!  It was so easy to do and the boys absolutely loved it!  In this video I show you the super simple steps to make your own Mogie pancakes.  I hope you make your own (and then tag me on social media!).  And don’t forget to subscribe to my YouTube channel!

10 Picture Books My Boys Loved

I don’t talk about picture books too often on this blog–I’m a YA librarian, so I pretty much stick to YA with a little adult thrown into the mix.  But I’m a mama to two boys–a 3-year-old and a 5-year-old–so picture books and small chapter books are becoming the daily norm in our house.  And this summer we’ve found some GREAT books!  Books with fantastic illustrations, sweet story lines, and creative writing styles.  Of course, the boys don’t necessarily realize all that–they just know they want to re-read the stories over and over again! 5 Reasons Why You Need to Read the Miss P Series

Add this phenomenal series to your nightstand! 5 reasons why you should read this series!

A few years ago I was drawn to the book Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.  Maybe it was the creepy cover or author Ransom Riggs’ unique name, but nevertheless I knew I had to open up the book and dive inside.  And once I did, this book became a treasure to me.  One of the most memorable series that I’ve read in the last few years.  With the movie of the first book (directed by Tim Burton!) coming out later this year, this series’ popularity is about to soar.  And here are five reasons why you need to read it!
